Jenn Sporer: Accelerated Reader Program

Beginning in 2nd grade, all students take the “STAR” quiz (a computerized quiz of reading comprehension) at the beginning of each marking period, which used to determine a child’s reading level. All students are then assigned a number of points each marking period, referred to as their “goal”,  that they must achieve by reading books and passing quizzes.  The number of points is individualized, according to each child’s reading ability.  Parents typically receive notification each marking period, of their student’s current AR goal and reading level(s).

In our classroom, we have a wonderful variety of books which have been ‘AR leveled’ for students to read!  The level at which students select AR books is individualized, according to his or her reading ability. Books may also be chosen from outside our classroom as long as they are within a child’s current level, and have an accompanying AR quiz.  If you would like to check a particular title for a quiz or level, please use the following link: www.arbookfind.com. A Parent’s Guide for Using the AR Bookfinder, complete with questions and answers, can be found here: https://p.widencdn.net/4hw8cw/R40378-AR-Bookfinder-Parents-Guide

Upon completion of reading an ‘AR book’, students take a quiz, through the Accelerated Reader program, on the computer. There are multiple levels to progress through.  The program requires a 92% quiz average before a student is permitted to move to the next level.

A student’s achievement in the AR program is a part of his/her reading grade for each marking period in 2 ways:  completion of goal and overall quiz average.  For example, a student who has completed his or her goal and has an overall quiz-average of 90% for the marking period will have 2 grades factored-into their final reading grade:  100% (for completion of the goal) and 90% (for the overall average of all quizzes taken).

Students’ AR progress can be tracked through the “Renaissance Home Connect” link which allows you to sign-up for automatic e-mails whenever your child takes a quiz. Your child will need to know their login information before accessing the link here: https://hosted260.renlearn.com/25566/HomeConnect/Login.aspx
