Child Study Team

Welcome to the Child Study Team (CST) page!

The CST and parents determine what strategies should be started to help the student achieve success in the regular classroom.  The CST concept is based on collaboration and joint planning throughout the entire process.

Students may need the Child Study Team if they are demonstrating:

  • Academic difficulties

  • Attention difficulties

  • Social/Emotional concerns

  • Behavioral concerns

  • Identified students having difficulty with current supports

  • Or any other issue affecting their educational process

The focus of the team will be one of prevention, as well as intervention.  Public schools are being faced with a wide range of problems that surpass the usual learning barriers.  Drug and alcohol use, domestic violence, aggression, use of weapons, school violence, emotional disturbances and behavioral disorders are being observed all too frequently.

It is the goal of this team to provide training and support to not only teachers but other staff members, parents and the community at large.

The goal of the Child Study Team is to foster communication between parents, administrators, support professionals, teachers and the student regarding any factors that may be impeding a child’s learning. This communication will be the basis for a team problem-solving approach to address concerns.

Research indicates that parent involvement makes an enormous impact on students’ attitudes, attendance and academic achievement

Referrals to the Child Study Team can come from anyone. The referral source will be a core team member and an important source of data regarding the referral concern. A common referral form will be available in the building guidance office. The team will always include the parent, and the team will be developed further based on the individual referral concerns.

Team member can include, but are not limited to:

Classroom Teacher
Principal / Assistant Principal
Guidance Counselor
School Psychologist
Title 1 Teacher
Supervisor of Special Education
Nurse
Related Services Providers (Speech/OT/PT)

After the team is developed, the initial Child Study Team meeting will clearly identify student strengths and protective factors, as well as the referral concerns. The team will conclude the initial meeting with a team consensus on how to address the referral concern and a timeline on how the team will monitor the progress of the recommendations.

***Please provide data to support the Child Study Team referral. Data can consist of and is not limited to the following: aimswebPlus, i-Ready, STAR Reading, Study Island, PSSAs, CDTs, Title 1, Unit Tests, and Classroom-Based Assessments.
