Parent Night

Wellsboro High School is preparing to bring the Odyssey of the Mind program back to the high school for the 2019-2020 school year. On Tuesday, October 22nd at 6:30 p.m., we will be having a Parent & Student Night in the High School Library Media Center (LMC) to discuss the Odyssey of the Mind program. Any high school student who is interested in participating should attend. Parents of interested students are encouraged to attend as well. At this meeting, we will discuss the requirements of the Odyssey of the Mind program and how students and parents can participate.

What is Odyssey of the Mind?

As described by the Odyssey of the Mind Association, “Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem-solving competition for students of all ages. Kids select a problem, create a solution, and then bring their solution to competition against other teams in their age category. Students work in teams of up to seven members under the guidance of a coach. Teams create solutions to long-term problems over a period of months. Teams come up with all the ideas and do all the work on their solutions themselves. Teams work within the cost limited stated in the problem. Teams have 8 minutes to present their long-term problem solution in competition. Teams are scored for creativity in categories specific to each problem and for meeting the requirements of the problem. Teams must also solve a spontaneous problem on the day of competition. The combined long-term score, the style score and the spontaneous score determines a team’s standing in competition. Teams must abide by the general rules in the program Guide, the limitation in the problems, and any problem clarifications issued during the year that pertain to their selected problem.”

Participation in the Wellsboro High School Odyssey program is open to all students in grades 9-12. Students who are interested will need to be able to make a long-term commitment to the team. Teams will begin to practice within the next couple of weeks and will meet once or twice per week until just before the Regional Competition date. As the Regional Competition date approaches, teams may meet more than twice a week with some meetings be on weekends. Each team will need to find adults to coach their team and judge at the competition.

The dates for the Odyssey of the Mind competitions are listed below. Students who are part of an Odyssey of the Mind team need to be available to participate in all competition dates.

  • Regional Competition: March 7th at Berwick Area Middle/High School
  • State Competition: Saturday, April 4th at Lock Haven University
  • National Competition: May 27th – May 30th at Iowa State University
